Florence, the sure know how to celebrate Easter.

We arrived in Florence Saturday afternoon and got settled in our hostel before heading out.

Our first stop was the campinelle at the Duomo.  We climbed up 441 skinny, winding steps to a beautiful view of the city.  The rest of the day we just walked around and explored everything...
Indians.
Church of Santa Maria Novella.
Love it.
Duomo. We climbed that big tower.

Sunday was Easter, and Florence sure knows how to celebrate. They call it the "Burning of the Cart." It all starts early in the morning with a festive parade around the city with a gigantic wooden cart, ending at the Duomo. Then there is a service in the church, but you have to get tickets WAY in advance, so we didn't get in. The archbishop lights this dove on fire, no worries, its fake =) The dove is on a wire in the middle of the church, and when it is lit on fire it shoots out of the church, past the doors and lands at the cart right outside of the doors. The dove lights a set of fireworks off, turning into an awesome 20 minute show full of fireworks and colored smoke! When all the fireworks have gone off, the dove shoots back on the wire into the church. If it lands with no problems, it is supposed to mean they will have a prosperous year. The entire square was packed with people, so all we could really do was crane our necks, but the whole experience was awesome!
Fireworks!
The fake David.
Ponte Vecchio.
Easter dinner =)

We explored for a little bit more that day, grabbed dinner and went to an English-speaking church I had found. We were able to meet up with Claire at the church, and it was so good to see her!
Claire!
